How I detailed the interior of a station building

I bought a secondhand model of Chelfham station building (ex Lynton & Barnstaple) on eBay for a reasonable price with a view to using it on the railway. It was constructed from a GRS kit. In the end, I opted to standardise on wooden buildings constructed mostly for T&M Models resin kits (see How I assembled the station buildings). So the model of Chelfham had been languishing on the shelf for a year or so before I decided to put it back on eBay. Before, welling it I decided it would benefit from some tidying-up - or rather a complete refurbishment. The exterior was painted with acrylics in the same way as the T&M models and then sealed with matt varnish.


Then, for reasons I cannot really fathom, I decided it might sell better if I detailed the interior. having not done this for my other models, this would act as a test-bed.

Firstly a base for the interior was cut from corrugated plastic board:


The walls and ceiling were then cut out:



The idea was to make a completely separate box for the interior so it could be removed for more detailing. Next, I filled the surrounds of the doors and windows with flexible filler:

... and then cut a load of planks from coffee stirrers for the panelling - I found a pair of scissors was perfectly OK for this job.



After smearing some Evo-stick adhesive on the walls, the planks were stuck in place, leaving a slightly over-scale gap between each one.


Architraves were made for the doorways by cutting coffee stirrers down the middle longitudinally, and then mitring the corners:


Once all the interior walls had been panelled in this way......


.....  they were painted. Cream gloss paint for the wall (left over from painting the garage door), and chocolate brown for the panelling using acrylics:


The walls on all but the front of the model were then hot-glued in place:

.... and more coffee stirrers were glued to the floor as floorboards - again the gaps were slightly exaggerated. The floor was varnished with an antique pine stain and window sills and a sill for the panelling were added:

The interior was then furnished with benches around the walls of the waiting room and the booking hall:

... and a table and desk made from off-cuts of timber and whittled lolly sticks:


These were varnished with antique pine stain and fixed into place with Evo-stick. Finally, the inside of the window frames and doors were painted and clear plastic was glued into the shell of the building across the windows and the interior was eased into place to check clearances.


Lighting
Next, I turned my attention to interior lighting; no point in detailing the interior if no one can see it. I cannibalised a solar rock light. I bought a set of these a while back and was never really that impressed by them. The circuit and components were carefully removed:


...... and then the LEDs were unsoldered from their circuit board. This was a bit fiddly, but they came out quite easily with the minimum of heat (I didn't want to fry them!).

The LEDs were then soldered to lengths of fine wire from an earpiece. This was the finest wire I could find. The wires were interwoven with strands of nylon thread which were teased out and melted with the iron before solder was applied to the copper strands.


Shades for the lights were cut from circles of card which were folded into cones and glued above the LEDs.

The LEDs were then 'hung' from appropriate places in the ceiling of the inner box.

As the LEDs were wired in parallel, the leads from them were gathered together and then soldered to the original leads from the solar light circuit board (blue and white in the photo). The base of the battery box was hot glued to the upper side of the ceiling and the wiring was fixed in place with some white Gaffa tape.


 NOTE: I realised after two of the LEDs failed to light that I had got the polarity of their leads wrong. Swapping them over soon fixed the problem.

The wires to the photo cell were snipped and extended with a suitable one metre length of two core cable. This was threaded through a hollow stake ('borrowed' from another solar garden light). The top of the stake was cut at an angle of 45 degrees, the cable was then soldered to the leads from the photocell and insulated with tape before the solar cell was hot glued to the top of the stake.


The other end of this lead was then hot glued to the side of the inner box and soldered to the charge leads (making sure I got the polarity right this time!).

More Gaffa tape was applied to the edges of the ceiling and the front wall to act as hinges so that further detail could be added at a later date.


A dolls house coffee table was bought to act as a table in the waiting room, some figures were glued into the rooms to give a little more atmosphere, and then the lighting was tested after dark just to make sure everything was functioning as expected.




Although I am aware of some imperfections in my modelling, I and pleased to say this approach passes muster and will be used to add detail to the other buildings on the line. Hopefully, as everything has been constructed in plastic or treated with varnish, it should survive the damp conditions which prevail in our climate.

Progress Report 28

A couple of new developments since the last report. Firstly I've widened the boards supporting Beeston Market Station and added four new sidings; two for goods and two for a loco shed (see - How I extended the extension).

While I was at it, I bought a plastic tarpaulin to cover the station when not in use. Because this area is overhung with trees it tends to remain damp and also accumulates a lot of muck from fallen leaves. I am hoping the tarp will alleviate this particularly when I come to add some of the finer details and embellishments.

I've also fixed the signal box (made from a T&M Models* kit) in place at Beeston Market to indicate its status as the main station on the line.

The station building at Peckforton (also from T&M Models - see How I assembled the station buildings) has been fixed in place

and picket fencing (from Garden Railway Services - GRS) has been added to the platform.

Next on the list is to build a timber yard alongside the siding in the foreground of this shot and add name-boards, people, a cattle dock and all sorts of general clutter (porters' trolley, packing cases etc.).

Progress Report 26 - Overview of developments

A small amount of progress has been made since the last progress report in September. As I have a full time job, I tend to be on tick-over until the holiday periods when I then have an opportunity for some more intensive activity. Three recent developments have taken place; the production of a set of six open wagons made from resin castings, a station building for Bulkeley Station - a modification of a children's toy (Playskool Koala Brothers' Homestead) and the purchase of a rather fine s/h loco.

Open wagons

I felt that open wagons should be the mainstay of the goods stock for the Peckforton Railway. As my line has many similarities with both the Southwold and the Welshpool & Llanfair railways it seemed that the rural location would require a fair amount of coal, agricultural and general goods traffic. The Southwold Railway had a fleet of 19 open wagons (not inc PO wagons) yet only two covered vans, while the W&L had 40 open wagons (not including PO wagons) and four vans. Having already accumulated and constructed five closed vans but only four open wagons, I realised I was going to need a considerable increase in the number of open wagons if my railway was going to reflect anything like realistic practice in freight handling.

I decided to create a mould for casting the ends and sides of open wagons which I then attached to Hartland Loco Works chassis.

A station building for £5.50
Previously I had made station buildings for all but one of the stations on the line from T&M resin kits (see How I assembled the station buildings). For the missing building I decided to adopt a different approach by modifying a readymade children's toy which I bought on eBay for £5.50.

A new loco for the railway
An unplanned trip to Garden Railway Specialists while on a weekend in London resulted in an an unexpected and opportune purchase of a rather fine 2-4-0 Barclay tank loco.


Its origins are uncertain but there is some suggestion (from fellow modellers on the G Scale Central website) that it might be based on a former GRS kit. It needs a little tidying-up and a repaint in PLR livery, but it is a welcome addition to the line.

How I made the Peckett locomotive


The locomotive was made from a kit purchased from Garden Railway Specialists (GRS). The kit contains all the parts needed apart from the chassis which is needs to be pillaged from an 0-4-0 LGB starter set loco such as 'Rusty'. My 'Rusty' was purchased for £30.00 from eBay.

A fine cross-head screwdriver is needed to dismantle 'Rusty' until the chassis is revealed.
The instructions for the model are sketchy, particularly when it comes to the fine detailing of the cab controls. The whitemetal parts are beautifully finished, however, and needed only a minimum of filing to remove the flash.


The whitemetal parts were fixed in place with Rapid Araldite - which sets in ten minutes. There was a certain logic to the positioning of the controls, though I did try searching the internet for photos - none of which were particularly helpful in the end. My apologies to experts who may spot I have misplaced a dial or handle.

Once the cab was completed, I tackled the footplate and buffer beams. This fitted snugly over the chassis with very little adjustment needed. The styrene sheet was bonded with MekPak solvent adhesive.
Next, I tackled the saddle tank assembly. This is pre-formed and required very little adjustment to fit into place.

The saddle tank assembly was then attached to the footplate, making sure there was sufficient space for the cab to be added. Before the cab was constructed, I added lead to the saddle tank/boiler assembly. A piece of lead flashing was cut into suitably sized pieces to fit into the tank. On reflection, I would also have added lead to the firebox in the cab as the loco is now slightly front-heavy - the benefit of hindsight!


Finally the cab interior and cab were added, together with the whitemetal fittings such as the handrail knobs, spectacle surrounds, springs, sandboxes, chimney, etc.. Again, Araldite Rapid was used, though I had a few problems fixing the springs in place so Super Glue was used for this. The guard from the LGB starter-set was butchered slightly (I cut off his paddle) and glued in place as the driver. I may have to buy a fireman to keep him company, though.
A few gaps and blunders were filled with Milliput and then the whole model was smoothed over with fine wet and dry to remove any unwanted blobs of Araldite and disguise a few imperfections (mine, not the kit's).

Painting
Before paining, rivet detail was added to the buffer beams using Cambrian rivet heads carefully glued in place with solvent adhesive.

Firstly, the cab orifices were masking-taped over from the inside. I realised that I needed to remove the cab roof to achieve this so prised it off (I'd suggest making it removeable from the start). A couple of coats of Plasticote grey primer from a spray-can was followed by a a couple of thin coats of Brunswick Green acrylic spray from Humbrol. It may be me, but I found it very difficult to get an even finish with the Humbrol spray. The roof was spray painted black (much easier being removeable). The buffer beams were picked out in red Plasticote enamel. I tried Humbrol enamel initially but this took ages to dry. Plasticote brass paint was used for the fittings such as the spectacle surrounds and the top of the chimney.



I'm not entirely happy with the finish and so may have another go at it when the weather warms up a little (I'm banished to the conservatory and leave the doors open when spraying. The family (cat included) does not like the smell!). I will then do a little light weathering and seal it all with a couple of coats of satin varnish.

Just noticed that the cab steps need to be glued back in place. These were knocked off by the abutments of the viaduct - which needs to be tidied up anyway - another job for next Spring!
